On Saturday, February 3, the Inland Empire Center for International Trade Development will be a sponsor of the Inland Empire Conference- Model United Nations (IECMUN) event hosted at Riverside City College. Over 125 students from high schools and colleges from across the region will discuss issues of global importance and negotiate with their peers on resolutions to address these issues. The event will mirror debates and procedures in the United Nations' General Assembly and its committees such as the Security Council, UNICEF, and others.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a one-of-a-kind experience for students looking to become more familiar with international issues and the workings of the United Nations (UN). At a Model UN conference, students assume the role of diplomats, each representing different countries in different committees and programs of the UN, and discuss various topics ranging from terrorism and nuclear security, to the environment, global trade and human rights. Working together with students from across the world, students develop solutions to many of the world’s problems and decide what actions the UN should take. In simulating the real-world conferences of the UN and in writing their own proposals to real-world problems and concerns, students learn about the challenges facing the UN and how to make the world a better place.
